Formula E Co-Founder in Talks with Red Bull F1’s Sergio Perez for Switch to All-Electric Series

Formula E co-founder Alberto Longo has revealed he is in ongoing talks with Red Bull F1’s Sergio Perez and hopes he will switch to the all-electric series when his F1 contract expires. I’m here. Perez is currently under contract with Red Bull Racing until the end of 2024, but it seems unlikely that the team will offer him a new contract. Perez may have interest from other teams, but Longo wants to compete in Formula E.

The grid for last weekend’s season-opening Mexico City E-Prix featured several former players, including Lucas di Grassi, Jean-Eric Vergne, Stoffel Vandoorne, Sébastien Buemi, Pascal Wehrlein and Nick de Vries. F1 drivers were listed. Formula E has a number of drivers who have not signed contracts for season 11, and this summer is expected to be another eventful season. If Perez wants to move to Formula E, he probably has a number of options. Longo said Formula E is “home” for Perez. If Perez, 33, were to quit F1 and join Formula E, he would be a huge signing for the all-electric series as a whole, given his huge following in Mexico. If he transfers, Perez will be able to race at the iconic Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez, the venue for the opening race. Perez’s participation in the Mexico City E-Prix might draw thousands of fans, potentially the biggest attendance in Formula E history. In many ways, Formula E would be the perfect series for Perez to race following F1, as the F1 championship traditionally ends in July. That would allow Perez to spend significantly more time with his family. That time will be limited this year, with F1 planning a 24-race calendar. Perez’s future involvement in Formula E would be a win-win for everyone, except for him and the driver he replaces. Only time will tell if Formula E and Perez’s paths cross, but what is absolutely clear is that Longo is keen for him to make the switch to the series. Formula E co-founder believes it’s time for F1 drivers to move on to “real competition”. “I’m always talking to Czech and I hope he makes the leap to real competition,” Longo told AS with a smile. “Formula E is your home and its doors are open. You are welcome.”
