Formula 1 Sprint Format Criticisms and Potential Changes: Insights from Sergio Perez and Lando Norris

Every weekend in the sprint format in Formula 1 seems to increase the criticism of the actors, and Saturday’s race at the São Paulo Grand Prix is no exception. Sixth and last event of this type contested this year, it even convinced Sergio Perez of the need to change things profoundly. Many topics are being discussed today, starting with the organization of the weekend which might evolve in 2024but the Mexican believes that Formula 1 must go further if it wants the sprint to be a success.

“I think if they want to keep this sprint racing format, it needs to be changed”assures the pilot Red Bullwho finished third on Saturday. “I would suggest a reverse grid, something that would make it more interesting for the public, because I don’t think it works the way we want it to.”

“There’s not much going on during these races. I think a reverse grid would mix all that up and create more opportunities, a lot more overtaking. If we want to keep this format, we should try something different. “quite different, because in the last two years this type of event hasn’t generated a lot of good racing.”

At Interlagos, the high degradation of the soft tires mainly chosen by the drivers transformed the sprint, although short by nature, into a premature management race for some. Paradoxically, Lando Norris believes that without this data, and if each driver had been able to attack without sparing themselves, the race would have been even more boring.

“We don’t attack like it’s qualifying, but I don’t think we’ve ever done it in F1”explains the pilot McLaren. “We still saw some good racing, apparently, according to those behind. If everyone pushed hard, I would say there would probably be less overtaking.”

“What we had today [samedi] is difficult, it may not be the most pleasant. We don’t feel like we’re attacking as much, but we’re still driving at the limit of the grip we have. It’s always difficult behind the wheel, I think it’s exciting for those who succeed and those who don’t. But if there was no degradation, then I would say there probably wouldn’t be a single overtake during the race.”
