Shocking scenes occurred on the sidelines of the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo immediately following qualifying on Friday evening. An approaching storm destroyed, among other things, the roof of a spectator stand.

Journalist Andy Hone showed the extent of the disaster via his social media account at It is not yet known whether anyone was injured.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this in my entire career,” said second-placed Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) following qualifying on Sky, which had to be canceled with four minutes left on the clock due to approaching weather. “I was thinking regarding coming in at the end of the round.”

“The sky was really black. I knew that when the rain came, it would be right,” reported pole-sitter Max Verstappen (Red Bull) from the qualifying finale. “The first sector felt good, the rest was absolutely shocking. It hasn’t rained yet, but the wind was there and I had a tailwind in the second sector.”

Immediately before the end of Q3, thick, black clouds had rolled in over the Interlagos track. A little later there was lightning in the sky and it started pouring rain. The race management ultimately canceled the session for safety reasons. Verstappen secured pole ahead of Leclerc, while Lance Stroll, somewhat surprisingly, came third in an Aston Martin.
