Sergio Pérez went through Q3 unfairly in the Austrian Grand Prix qualifying session, his final lap of Q2 seeing him overshooting the track limits. This notably excluded Pierre Gasly, then tenth in the qualifying session.
The marshals did not react quickly enough at the end of Q2 and therefore summoned the Red Bull driver, who was given a penalty, because he was indeed guilty of having crossed the white line at the turn 8.
The stewards therefore erased his time, following having looked into the problem in detail. They also added that he “would not have passed in Q3” without his infraction, and therefore decided to remove all of his Q3 laps in addition to his Q2 lap.
Red Bull argued that Pérez and the team took risks in Q3, but the stewards did not consider this to be related to the infringement in the previous part of qualifying.
Pérez will therefore start 13th for the Sprint. The marshals did not specify which race, tomorrow’s or Sunday’s, would be affected, but it seems obvious that it is the Sprint, since Pérez’s position will probably change following the Sprint, in view of the race. Sunday. A clear penalty will therefore be more difficult to apply.
