Formula 1 | Massa: Alonso’s move to Aston Martin is strange

Brazilian Felipe Massa thinks Fernando Alonso joining the Aston Martin team next season in the Formula 1 world championship is considered strange.

Alonso stunned the world of Formula 1 last week, when he announced that he will join the Aston Martin team in 2023, as a replacement for Sebastian Vettel, who will leave the championship at the end of the season.

This comes in light of the continued failure of the Aston Martin team to achieve good progress in performance, with its competition for points with difficulty, and with its presence in the ninth place, out of 10 teams, in the World Championship so far this season.

Massa, who partnered with Alonso at Ferrari between 2010 and 2013, believes that Alonso’s competitive nature, and his desire to be at the top only, makes his joining Aston Martin strange, and he finds no point in this move.

Massa said: “First of all, I have to say that Fernando Alonso is a really amazing driver. I had the opportunity to be his teammate for several years at Ferrari.”

“I learned a lot from him and, from my point of view, I think he is one of the best drivers in the history of Formula 1. To be honest, I found him joining the Aston Martin team a little strange.”

He added: “I think the Aston Martin team is the biggest winner in this deal, I don’t know what benefits Alonso will achieve from joining the Aston Martin team. Alonso is very interested in having a competitive car, because he wants to show his true potential in Formula 1.”

continued: “However, if Aston Martin’s conditions remain as they are at the moment, Alonso will be content with competing for the top ten, and I don’t know if he would be interested in that.”.
