French motorsport is in mourning. This Thursday, Jean-Pierre Jabouille, one of the fourteen French drivers to have won a Formula 1 race, died at the age of 80. The Parisian, nicknamed “The big blond” in racing circles, made his debut in the premier class in 1974 at the wheel of a Williams. He had to wait until 1979 to win his first success on the Dijon-Prenois circuit before pocketing a second one a year later in Austria.
Jean-Pierre Jabouille, author of six podiums in 49 Grands Prix, also marked the history of Renault by becoming the first rider to offer him a victory in Formula 1. In 1980, he gave way to Alain Prost, future quadruple world champion, with the French team and ended his career with a final season with Ligier. After an experience in Endurance, the Parisian became boss of Peugeot Sport, engine supplier of McLaren during the 1994 season. But a year later, the English team will finally be powered by Mercedes. A reversal which will remain the great failure of the other career of Jean-Pierre Jabouille.
