Hamilton has been waiting for a victory for almost two years
Formula 1’s guest appearance in Brazil, including a sprint this weekend, might offer a foretaste of a potentially more exciting 2024 season. Last year, surprisingly, the Silver Arrows celebrated an unchallenged double victory on the Interlagos race track, with George Russell winning ahead of teammate Hamilton. Since Brazil 2022, the former industry leader has been waiting for the next complete success. Superstar Hamilton, who came to the track on Thursday wearing an unusual outfit in honor of his role model Ayrton Senna, has now been winless for almost two years.
The 38-year-old Brit has the best chance of ending the longest winless streak of his career this weekend in São Paulo. On the one hand, the track suits the Mercedes car and on the other hand, Hamilton has already won the Brazilian Grand Prix three times. In 2021, the seven-time world champion raced to victory in Interlagos from last place on the grid. “I love the track. There is something very special regarding Brazil,” says Brazil’s honorary citizen Hamilton, who is optimistic regarding the last three races of the season. “I think the next few races will hopefully be close.”
Wolff remains skeptical
But team boss Wolff remains skeptical despite the upward trend: “I don’t want to raise my expectations of Brazil too high, because last year it was a bit of a surprise that we dominated this weekend.” Hamilton wants to lay the foundation for his 104th Grand Prix victory in qualifying on Friday (7 p.m./live ServusTV).
