Formula 1 | Enough is enough: Hamilton tackles the inaction of social networks on the Latifi affair

Like Timo Glock before him, the hapless Nicholas Latifi played an unwitting but decisive role in the awarding of the world title in the final race of 2021.

His accident not only sparked smoky conspiracy theories; but, much less funny, death threats, to the point that the Williams pilot had to take on a bodyguard.

After Lando Norris and Nicholas Latifi himselfLewis Hamilton (who was speaking at the presentation of the W13), in turn spoke on the subject.

Of course to support Nicholas Latifi; but also to broaden the subject. And the Briton, with his weight in the debate, puts pressure on GAFAM and Twitter: when will there be real regulation of social networks?

Remember that Lewis Hamilton is not at his first attempt: he and several pilots had moreover participated in a boycott of the networks for these same reasons last year (see our article).

“At the end of the day, I don’t think there’s been a huge change, evolution or enough work from these social platforms. We still have to push for them to make changes” Lewis Hamilton said this week.

“Mental health is a real issue and through these social media people are being harassed and no one deserves this. – it should never be tolerated. »

“And they [les plateformes] are able to change these things and make changes. But they don’t seem to be doing it fast enough. So I think we just have to keep pushing. »

If he did not speak in public on the Nicholas Latifi case, Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, quickly gave his support to the Williams driver in private.

“I have been in contact with Nicholas. He has my full support, and I know how difficult he can be in these situations. »

“And it’s important for him to know that he has the support of the people around him. »

“You can see there’s so much passion in this sport, that’s what makes this sport so great. There is so much passion, but we have to channel it in a positive way. Not in a negative way. »
