After a furious start to the season, Aston Martin had to contend with major difficulties in the final races before the summer break. In the second half of the Formula 1 year, the team around Fernando Alonso would like to build on the first races once more.
The British racing team will present an update package for the Dutch Grand Prix, which is intended to make the car more aerodynamic and faster. But even with this update, it will be extremely difficult for the Formula 1 team, says Alonso.
Formula 1: Second half of the season will be “much more difficult”
Aston Martin lost quite a bit of momentum ahead of the summer break. The team with Alonso was able to claim six podium places in a row at the beginning of the season. However, Alonso managed the last top 3 place in Canada, which was followed by rather mixed races.
Is another podium possible with the new update? “I hope so,” emphasizes Alonso in a media round before the race in Zandvoort. But he would not be “disappointed” if Aston Martin didn’t make it into the top three in the upcoming Grands Prix. The starting position is different now, the situation “much more difficult” than at the beginning of the season, added Alonso.

“The competition has grown, there are now four teams fighting for the podium. Everyone is close together behind Red Bull, it’s incredibly close around Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Aston Martin. So it might be difficult to get six more podiums in the second phase of the season, but I would be happy with two or three podiums,” said the 42-year-old regarding the prospects for the second half of the season.
Hamilton soon ahead of Alonso in the drivers’ championship?
His team does not set any such specific goals anyway. Aston Martin is regarding staying “involved in this fight” and continuing to be in the upper midfield, says Alonso. He adds: “The goal for the second phase of the season is to become a little more competitive once more.”
This probably also includes keeping Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton at a distance in the Formula 1 driver standings. The two ex-teammates are currently only one point apart. Alonso is currently third, Hamilton fourth.

“I don’t know it. It goes up and down. It looks different every week. The situation probably changes from race to race. It also depends on each team’s improvement,” he replied when asked if he would stay ahead of Hamilton in the coming weeks.
