Helmut Marko does not regret the 2022 season of sometimes terrible boredom, materialized by 17 victories in 22 Grands Prix for Red Bull Racing and a double without suspense in the Drivers’ and Constructors’ world championships. This is due to the qualities of the RB18 single-seater excellently exploited by the Austrian team combined with the decrescendo curve followed by Ferrari, unable to win one of the last 11 races. The ultimate consequence of this overwhelming domination by Milton Keynes, except for qualifying, the Scuderia thanked its team manager, Mattia Binotto, who officially left his place in Maranello to Frédéric Vasseur on Monday 9 January.

The future will tell if the firm at Cavalino made a good choice, but Helmut Marko already believes that it was wrong. The former French manager of Sauber has proven himself over the years in the various categories of motorsport to the pinnacle. But he now has before him a task of formidable magnitude in order to take the Reds to a final level, that of a world title which has been fleeing them since 2008.

“I don’t understand the changeadmits Helmut Marko, to the German magazine Auto, motor and sport. I consider Binotto to be an excellent technician and politician. He was simply overwhelmed with the task. But it would have sufficed to add a sports director who would have supported him on the circuits and in terms of strategy. With the newcomer, who has a lot of other activities, I see a weakening for Ferrari.
Joined Ferrari in the 2015 test team, promoted to head of the Engines department at the end of 2014 then technical director in 2016, the Italian-Swiss engineer then combined the functions of team principal in 2019, before officially leaving technical responsibilities without, however, losing control.
On the circuits, Mattia Binotto was assisted by the French engineer Laurent Mekies, competition director, and entrusted him with the responsibilities of team principal during several absences during the 2022 season.
Mattia Binotto is unlikely to reappear in the paddock in 2023 as he has signed a 12-month non-compete contract according to Italian site formu1a.uno, which is usually knowledgeable about the Scuderia.
