A former member of the mercenary group Wagner Group has admitted to killing and torturing dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war, in the most detailed “first-person account” of atrocities committed by Russian troops in Ukraine.

The Guardian reported that the 49-year-old Alexey Savichev (Alexey Savichev), a former Russian prisoner recruited by the Wagner Group in September last year, revealed in a telephone interview with the Guardian that he was in Udon during the six-month war. Having participated in the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war, he said “we were told not to capture anyone, but to shoot them on the spot”.

Savichev referred to his involvement in the killing of 20 surrounded Ukrainian soldiers last autumn while fighting in the Ukrainian city of Soledar. I don’t regret anything I did there, and I would choose to return to the battlefield if I could.”

In addition, Savichev mentioned that he and other Wagnerian mercenaries “threw grenades” and killed dozens of wounded Ukrainian prisoners of war held in ditches in January this year, adding that “we will also torture Soldiers, there are no rules”.

The Guardian could not independently verify the gruesome claims, but Russian criminal documents show Savichev was a convicted murderer who was pardoned on September 12 last year. The Wagner Group has recruited tens of thousands of prisoners, including convicted murderers, to fight in eastern Ukraine. If they survive nearly six months of brutal fighting on March 12 this year, they will be freed.
