Former Vice President of Ecuador Seeks Safeguarding in Mexico City Embassy: Updates and Analysis

Mexico City. The government of Mexico confirmed that the former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge David Glas Espinel, has been in its embassy in Quito since last December 17, where he went to request safeguarding, expressing fear for his safety and personal freedom.

“In accordance with the Mexican legal framework regarding international protection of persons, with the protocols of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) for this type of case, and with the pro-person principle enshrined in article 1 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, access to Glas Espinel was allowed as a Alex Reed,” said the Mexican Foreign Ministry.

He added that the former official has not yet formalized a request for political asylum and that if he does, it will be carefully analyzed and the necessary information will be collected to proceed accordingly, in accordance with the relevant international treaties to which Mexico and Ecuador are parties and with customary international law on the matter.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry expressed its best willingness to maintain dialogue and collaboration with the Ecuadorian authorities to obtain all the necessary information regarding the situation of Jorge David Glas Espinel.
