The former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, has been released from prison this Sunday following a judge from the Santa Elena canton, in the west of the country, has granted him ‘habeas corpus’, following having remained in prison for four and a half years .

The one who was vice president of Rafael Correa in 2013 and with Lenín Moreno in 2017, has taken to the streets around noon (local time), where dozens of followers, friends and family have received him, according to the newspaper ‘El Comercio’ .
Glas weighed two firm sentences for cases of illicit association and bribery. In addition, he had a process open for being alleged co-author of a crime of embezzlement -misappropriation of public funds-.
The current Government, led by Guillermo Lasso, has shown its rejection of the judicial decision and has announced that it will present an appeal.
“Given the judicial decision that grants the ‘habeas corpus’ in favor of Jorge Glas (…) we express our rejection and legal disagreement, as well as our concern regarding the abuse of constitutional actions,” the Ecuadorian Presidency said in a statement. .
The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office has also disagreed with the release of the former vice president, and has recalled that an eight-year sentence weighs on him that he has not yet finished serving.
