Former US national gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar was stabbed multiple times in a Florida prison on Sunday during a fight with another inmate, BBC partner CBS News reported.
Nassar, 59, was sentenced in 2018 to 175 years in prison for abusing several gymnasts.
According to local press, Nassar remains in stable condition at a hospital following Sunday’s attack.
He suffered a collapsed lung following being stabbed twice in the neck, twice in the back and six times in the chest, prison sources told NBC.
In a statement to the BBC, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said an inmate had been assaulted at 14:35 EST (1835 GMT) on Sunday at Coleman Penitentiary in Florida, where the disgraced doctor is serving his sentence.
“Immediate action was taken by response personnel to save his life,” the office said, and the inmate was transferred to a local hospital “for treatment and evaluation.” An internal investigation has been opened.
Neither prison staff nor other inmates were injured in the incident.

Gymnasts Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Maggie Nichols testified once morest the doctor.
Nassar admitted to sexually assaulting athletes while working for the USA Gymnastics program and Michigan State University, where he ran a clinic.
The doctor – who has been serving time in a Florida federal prison – also pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography.
More than 330 women and girls from USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University have accused Nassar of sexual assault.
Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney testified to being abused by Nassar.
Some athletes said they had reported the abuse to adults, including coaches and doctors, but their complaints were dismissed.
An investigation published in 2021 into the FBI’s handling of the scandal found that the agency made a series of errors, including delays and cover-ups, that allowed Nassar’s abuse to continue for several more months following the case was opened for first time.
The FBI’s own internal watchdog discovered that the institution ignored the allegations regarding Nassar and made errors early in the investigation.
Several women who were sexually assaulted by Nassar – including Raisman, Biles and Maroney – have sued the FBI for $1 billion for failing to properly handle credible allegations of sexual assault.
USA Gymnastics agreed to pay $380 million to Nassar’s victims, while Michigan State University reached a $500 million settlement with the victims.
