Former Sugar Factory in Siegendorf Purchased by State Real Estate Company: Historic Landmark Under New Ownership

The state real estate company (LIB) has bought the former sugar factory in Siegendorf. The holding company’s spokesman confirmed this to RegionalMedien Burgenland today. The sugar factory in Siegendorf is one of the most historic factories in Burgenland and is considered a “landmark” of the market town with 3,000 inhabitants.

SIEGENDORF. According to Christian Uchann, LIB group spokesman, the purchase is a “strategic property purchase”. Already in August last year, the state confirmed that Krobath Immobilien GmbH would like to sell the site of the former sugar factory in Siegendorf for strategic reasons. The business agency Burgenland is constantly looking for suitable areas that would be suitable for the establishment of new, promising companies in Burgenland.

Already sealed

Since these are already sealed areas, the modernization and continued use of a brown field area (by this we mean disused areas that were previously used industrially) with existing dedication and infrastructural provision is sustainable and desirable. The holding company did not yet want to comment on the purchase price or further use of the space.

ÖVP: “Red shopping tour”

The ÖVP Burgenland says: “The red shopping spree” continues. It only took 25 days in the new year for another “million-dollar purchase at state expense” to be made. ÖVP regional manager Patrik Fazekas criticizes the purchase and the fact that the purchase price is not communicated to the outside world. “Many people from Burgenland are rightly wondering how long this will last.”

A solution is needed

We at RegionalMedien Burgenland have already asked Siegendorf Mayor Rita Stenger (SPÖ) for a statement. So far there has been no response. In June last year, she emphasized to the media that the sugar factory needed a solution due to the increasingly deteriorating building conditions.

The history of the sugar factory

The sugar factory in Siegendorf was built in 1853 in Siegendorf, which was then Hungarian, by Conrad Patzenhofer, who came from Bavaria and was the former technical manager of the Hirmer sugar factory. Until 1859 only raw sugar was produced, after which white sugar was also produced. The sugar factory and the associated beet growing operations became an important employer for the region around Siegendorf. A prisoner of war camp was set up in the sugar factory, which was temporarily closed during the Second World War. In 1977 the sugar factory was sold to the Tulln sugar factory. After the two sugar factories Tulln and Bruck merged in 1983, the sugar factory in Siegendorf was shut down in 1988 and sold to the industrialist Anton Krobath in 1992. Since then, the site has housed the East Commercial Zone (GZO).
