The US State Department has expressed concern regarding reports that a former Sudanese official, for whom an arrest warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court, has left prison.
In an exclusive statement to Al-Hurra TV, a ministry spokesman said, “The International Criminal Court has charged (Ahmed) Haroun with war crimes and crimes once morest humanity in Darfur and he must face justice for his role in these unbelievable atrocities.”
Ahmed Haroun, the former Sudanese official in Omar al-Bashir’s regime, had announced that he had left Kober prison with other former officials and that they would provide protection for themselves, according to Archyde.com.
Haroun, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, added in an audio statement broadcast by Taiba TV, on Tuesday, that he and other former officials are ready to appear before the judiciary when he plays his role.
The statement comes following reports that inmates at Kober Prison had escaped earlier this week. Al-Bashir and his senior deputies were among those held in this prison.
It was not immediately clear if al-Bashir, who spent long periods in a military hospital, was in prison.
Sudan suddenly slipped into conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, in mid-April, killing at least 459 people, as well as damaging hospitals and other services and turning residential areas into war zones, according to Archyde.com.
Tens of thousands of people, including Sudanese and foreigners, fled the country to neighboring countries.
