Kim Seong-tae, former chairman of the Ssangbangul Group, who appeared as a witness at the trial of Lee Hwa-young, former vice-governor of peace in Gyeonggi-do, who was accused of remittance to North Korea, revealed his position on the reason for the remittance to North Korea.

Former Chairman Kim is also on trial for giving $8 million to North Korea, including $5 million for Gyeonggi-do’s smart farm project and $3 million for Gyeonggi-do governor Lee Jae-myeong’s visit to North Korea.

When former Vice-Governor Lee’s lawyer asked, “What did Gyeonggi Province promise Ssangbangwool if you paid in advance,” Kim replied, “They said that they might support Gyeonggi Province’s inter-Korean cooperation fund if sanctions once morest North Korea are lifted in the future.”

In response to the question, “How did you believe in the promise of the former vice-governor, who was not even elected?”

The presidential candidate that former Chairman Kim refers to seems to have referred to Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party’s representative, who was the governor of Gyeonggi-do at the time.

Former Chairman Kim emphasized several times in the previous trial that Lee would have been aware of the payment of the ssangbangwool.

He heard several times that “the former vice-governor Lee reported the support of Ssangbangwool to Governor Lee Jae-myung at the time,” and he also testified that he had a direct phone call with Governor Lee in Shenyang, China in January 2019.

At the trial that day, when former vice-governor Lee Hwa-young, who was listening to former chairman Kim, smiled, former chairman Kim shouted, “Don’t laugh,” causing a commotion.
