Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931 in Privoili, now part of Russia. He served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991. He was the President of the Soviet Union in 1990-91. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.
He officially joined the Communist Party in 1952 when he began studying law at Moscow State University. Graduated in Law in 1955. In 1970, Gorbachev became the first regional secretary of the Communist Party. He became a member of the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party in 1971. In 1978, he became the agriculture secretary of the party. 1979 Became a candidate member of the Politburo. He became a full member in 1980.
