According to the legal community on the 5th, Chief Judge Lee Jong-gwang of the 4th Criminal Division of the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced Kim, a 38-year-old former soccer player who was sent to trial on fraud charges, to three years in prison.

Mr. Kim defrauded 7 people of 570 million won from November 2019 to July of last year.

It was found that the victims included not only lovers but also fans from his time on active duty.

It was revealed that Mr. Kim borrowed money from the victims, claiming that he was close to professional basketball players and e-sports players and that he might make a profit on their investments through match-fixing.

Mr. Kim, who worked as a day laborer following retirement, lied by saying that he worked as a scout for a professional soccer team, that he owned expensive apartments in Seoul and Ilsan, and that he ran a large-scale soccer training center.

It was discovered that most of the borrowed money was spent on gambling, including sports Toto.

The court explained, “While the damage exceeds 500 million won, the reimbursement amount is only regarding 90 million won,” and took into account the fact that Mr. Kim used some of the money to pay for the treatment of his child suffering from an incurable disease as an advantageous circumstance.

Mr. Kim joined the Pohang Steelers in 2004 and later played for the Busan Transportation Corporation soccer team.

He was also sentenced to three months in prison for fraud in June last year.
