Former Slovak Economy Minister Announces Serious Threat to Russian Gas Supplies via Ukraine

This came according to what Herman wrote on his Facebook page, where he continued: “Russian gas supplies are decreasing significantly today, and my definite warning is that Russian gas supplies via Ukraine towards Slovakia are under serious threat.”

Herman pointed out that the transit of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian gas transportation system operator, on August 8, decreased to 37.25 million cubic meters per day, while in previous months it was about 42 million cubic meters per day.

“The drop in supplies comes at a time when there is heavy fighting between the Ukrainian and Russian armies near the Russian town of Sudzha, near which the gas pipeline through which Siberian gas is transported is also located, as it is an important gas measurement and transportation station,” Herman wrote.

The former minister noted that in 2022, also due to the fighting, the pipeline and the Sukharanovka border station have since been disabled, leaving Sudzha as the only operating point.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov said that units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, numbering about a thousand people, launched an attack on the Kursk region on August 6, with the aim of seizing territory in the Sudzha area, noting that their advance deep into Russian territory had been halted.

On the same day, the border town of Sudja came under repeated heavy shelling from Ukraine, and the region’s president described the situation in the city as “very tense” the next day.

The supply route through the Sudzha gas metering station is currently the only route for Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine. Gas prices in Europe, amid concerns about Russian gas transit, have reached $435 per thousand cubic meters for the first time since December.

In May 2022, Ukraine stopped receiving gas for transit through the Sukharanovka area, stating that it had come under the control of Russian forces on the territory of the Luhansk People’s Republic. As a result, there is only one outlet for gas to Europe. Gazprom stated that transporting all volumes through Sudzha is technologically impossible.

At the same time, the transit agreement between Gazprom and Ukraine assumes that the guaranteed daily pumping volume on both sides from 2021 will be 109.6 million cubic meters.
