A judge has sentenced the former Proud Boys leader to 17 years in prison. Prosecutors said Thursday that Joe Biggs was a key figure in a “seditious conspiracy” to prevent the final confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.

The sentence imposed is less than the prison sentence demanded by prosecutors. Prosecutors had asked for 33 years in prison for the former soldier. It is the second-highest prison sentence linked to the storming of the Capitol.

The judge said he was not trying to downplay the Jan. 6 violence, but that imposing a harsher sentence might create inequalities. Before the sentencing, Biggs apologized for his actions.

A man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison following the storming of the US Capitol more than two years ago. Among other things, he attacked police officers with a chair.
