“Sebastián Piñera Echenique was a political leader who paved the way throughout his entire career for a modern, democratic, liberal right, open to dialogue and agreements for the greater good of Chile.«Boric recalled.
In the same way, he admitted that the Chilean opposition had a much more hostile attitude than it deserved, given that “the complaints and recriminations sometimes went beyond what was fair”.
Boric also recalled that the last contact he had with Piñera was on what would ultimately be his last night of life, that is, Monday, February 5.after having had a telephone conversation in which they discussed topics such as the forest fires that have hit Valparaíso and Viña del Mar in recent days. Piñera offered the Chilean president his advice to combat this unfortunate situation.
Other personalities who were also present at Piñera’s farewell ceremony were former presidents. Eduardo Frei Ruíz and Michelle Bacheletwho remembered the difficult situations that Piñera went through during his mandates such as; the earthquake of February 27, 2010, the rescue of the 33 miners and the covid-19 pandemic.
Boric, Frei and Bachelet performed, together with the president of the Senate, Juan Antonio Coloma, the last guard of honor at the coffin of the former president.
One of the most emotional moments of Piñera’s funeral was carried out by the majority of 33 miners who spent 69 days trapped in a mine 700 meters deep.
“Thanks to him we were rescued. You took us out, president, you fought for us«commented one of the survivors.
Also present at the event were their 14 grandchildrenincluding the largest of them, Leónwho dedicated a beautiful message to the memory of his grandfather.
“The honor of having had Sebastián as a grandfather and naming him after his 14 grandchildren, who I am 100% sure feel the same pride as me. Thank you for being a life partner like no other.”said the young man.
After the tributes in front of the Palacio de la Moneda, Piñera’s coffin left for the cemetery, where he will be buried in a private ceremony.

Despite the controversies during his presidency, he was a prominent figure who led the nation through critical phases.
