Former opposition presidential candidate Enrique Márquez was reportedly detained along with his wife on Sunday night by “unidentified masked men,” and their phones were confiscated for no apparent reason.
Doctor and professor at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), Luis Fuenmayor Toro, denounced the irregularity on his X account, where he described the situation as “unacceptable.”
Fuenmayor said that the “masked men” took Márquez and his wife before “an official authority,” who seized their phones and then released them.
“This procedure is contrary to law and seeks to intimidate,” he warned.
The former candidate’s detention occurred one day after the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) rejected the recusal he introduced against magistrate Carlyslia Rodríguez, president of the Electoral Chamber.
Márquez accused Rodríguez of having “ties to political bias, a lack of impartiality and a lack of suitability to serve as a judge in the case of July 28.”
The TSJ indicated that the recusal is invalid because it is “untimely,” and ratifies its decision to validate the results of the presidential elections presented by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which declared Nicolás Maduro the winner.
