Former police officer killed wife and lover and killed himself 2024-04-27 18:33:47

Oregon State Police troopers began pursuing Elias Huizar following they saw a car driving on Interstate 5 near Eugene, Oregon, around 2:40 p.m. local time, Oregon State Police Chief Kyle Kennedy said.

“There was a minor collision (on the highway) and the suspect vehicle lost control. There was an exchange of gunfire at that location before the suspect vehicle fled once more … on the interstate,” Kennedy said. No one is known to have been injured in the shooting, he said.

Huizar’s vehicle eventually struck another vehicle and came to rest, Kennedy said.

“As officers made contact with the suspect vehicle, the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Kennedy said.

The 1-year-old boy, Roman Santos, for whom Washington state authorities had earlier issued an Amber Alert on the belief that Huizar had abducted him, was in the vehicle unharmed, Kennedy said. Officers removed him safely and he was placed in the care of Oregon authorities, police said.

Washington state authorities initially said the boy’s name was Roman Huizar, through an Amber Alert.

Former police officer Elias Huizar is on the run following allegedly shooting his ex-wife Amber Rodriguez eight times outside the elementary school where she worked. The former couple’s 9-year-old son told officers he “saw his father, Elias Huizar, shoot his mother.”

While searching for the maniacal killer, they found the body of his teenage girlfriend – identified by relatives as Angelica Santos – at his home just minutes from the school.

Her devastated family realized Angelica, 17, and the 1-year-old child she had with Huizar, Roman Santos, were missing and assumed the former police officer had kidnapped the infant. According to court records earlier this year, Huizar met the girl while working as a clerk at Washington High School in Yakima.

She was 11 when they met and 15 when he got her pregnant, Rodriguez wrote in her petition for a protective order once morest Huizar. The shooter left the Yakima Police Department in 2021 “following receiving a recommendation for discipline,” the department said Tuesday without providing additional information.

He then went on to work as a substitute teacher in the Richland School District until February of this year, when he was arrested for allegedly raping his underage girlfriend’s unconscious 16-year-old girlfriend following a night of drinking at their home.

Jail records show Huizar was charged with second-degree rape in February. He was released on $200,000 bond, according to the Tri-City Herald. The CNN sought details from the Benton County District Attorney’s office.

At the time of the arrest, the city of Yakima said Huizar was an employee there until February 2022, but did not say why he left.

Facebook posts from the Yakima Police Department show Huizar joined the department in December 2014 and began serving as a school resource officer in 2018.
