Former Perryton athletic director pleads guilty to having sex with student

AMARILLO, Texas (KEYU) – Former Perryton Athletic Director Cole Underwood today entered a plea agreement for having sexual relations with a 15-year-old student.

Documents indicate Underwood first met the student when she was in high school in Perryton.

Around November 2023, Underwood began communicating with her about more personal matters, asking her about her personal and family life. Underwood also began meeting with her alone in his office.

According to federal court documents, Underwood admitted to having sex with the minor at least 10 times.

In the documents, he says they had sex in his office at Perryton High School after school hours.

Some of the evidence cited includes a cell phone call that lasted more than six hours and communication through social media apps Snapchat, TikTok and Signal.

Underwood now faces life in prison.

A judge will sentence him at a later date. The sentence could also include a fine of up to $250,000 and registration as a sex offender.

A civil lawsuit filed by the girl’s father against Perryton ISD and Underwood is pending.

Underwood was placed on administrative leave from the school district in April 2024 and was arrested by the Ochiltree County Sheriff’s Office on April 25.

Underwood was then arrested in June 2024 on a federal complaint of enticement and attempted enticement of a minor.

Underwood has been in prison since June.
