Former Brazilian volleyball player Walewska Oliveira, gold medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, died this Thursday at the age of 43.

The news was confirmed by the Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV), who through a statement regretted the death of the Brazilian.

“We receive with sadness and immense regret the news of the death of the Olympic champion Walewska,” the CBV said in a statement, without giving details regarding the circumstances of the death.

According to a police report cited by the local press, the former athlete fell from the 17th floor of a building in Sao Paulo.

However, none of her relatives have commented on the causes of the athlete’s death.

Walewska, who played in the center position, had retired from the field last year.

It should be noted that the woman played three Olympic games with the Brazilian team, with a bronze medal in Sydney-2000, a fourth place in Athens-2004 and gold in Beijing-2008.

“I lost a daughter. It’s very hard,” reacted the coach of the Brazilian women’s team José Roberto Guimaraes, quoted by the Globo Esporte site.

Likewise, former volleyball player Ana Moser, until recently Brazil’s Minister of Sports, regretted the news and sent a message of support to the former athlete’s family.

“A warrior, kind and intelligent. Dedicated to teams, groups, always with a smile on her face. A great loss for us, much greater for the family. My deepest condolences and lots of prayer and strength to ease the pain,” she said.
