NEW YORK — The former acting chief of the New Bedford Fire Department was shot and killed Friday evening during a standoff with police at a Fairhaven bar. Paul Codere, 55, of Dartmouth was killed in the collision. The police reached the spot following receiving information that a ‘heavy drinker’ was involved in an altercation at the bar.
Coder had been drinking with friends for several hours before getting into a fight at the bar. Paul Coderre’s attempt to drive himself away was then intercepted by another person. The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said Coderre got into a fight in the parking lot when he was angered by the attempt to stop him from driving.
When the police arrived at the scene, Codere threatened the police with a gun. This prompted additional police from Acushnet and Mattapoisett to assist Fairhaven police. Officials tried to control the situation. But when Kedere was too old to fire at the officers, the police opened fire and killed Kodere. An Acushnet police officer was shot in the leg and taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. He sought treatment there and later returned home.
