Mastermind of NBA health insurance fraud, Terrence Williams will go behind bars. The former Nets player was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Two years ago, we wrote regarding a sad case that plagued former NBA players: health insurance fraud. In the box of the accused, several names that we saw passing for a while in the League like Glen Davis but especially Tony Allen. Nevertheless, the mastermind of the operation appeared to be Terrence Williams, the 2009 Draft 11 pick. By partnering with medical professionals (primarily dentists and GPs), he provided bogus bills to some of his peers for compensation (obviously). The players therefore sent the invoice to the health insurance set up by the NBA and recovered the money without having spent anything beforehand. Simple and efficient.
Except that the whole assembly, which still lasted 4 years between 2017 and 2021, ended up exploding and justice got its hands on the file. Of the 18 players involved in the case, 13 were able to get away with a probation or a suspended prison sentence. As a leader of fraud but also for acts of aggravated identity theft, Terrence Williams took him a much heavier sentence. The former swingman was sentenced to 10 years in prison but he must also pay 2.5 million dollars in compensation. The money stolen from NBA health insurance is estimated at around $5 million.

Drafted in 2009, Terrence Williams had only lasted four years in the NBA, the time to play (without shining) for the Nets, Rockets, Kings and Celtics. Then passed through the G League and abroad, we had lost track of him a little until this return to the spotlight of justice. Whoever posed for the traditional Draft photo with Stephen Curry, James Harden or even DeMar DeRozan in 2009, will now watch his former classmates play from federal prison.
