Former Morges coach Mike Zettel died at 69

The Canadian died in Ontario following a long illness. In Switzerland, he had also directed Langenthal, Uzwil, Biel and Chur.

A player in Swiss hockey for three decades, Canadian Mike Zettel died at the age of 69 following a long illness. As communicated by the German club Krefeld, a formation trained by the Ontarian between 1990 and 1995, “Zettel passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, last Thursday, in the small Canadian town of Elora.”

A prolific defender, Mike Zettel ended his playing career in 1984, following a season with SC Langenthal in the LNB. From the following exercise, he had become a coach. First in Uzwil, in the 1st league. Then at the Forward Morges, in the same category of game. He had piloted the Vaudois formation from 1985 to 1988 before performing a freelance behind the Langenthal bench, back in the third division of Swiss hockey.

In 1996/1997, he took charge of HC Bienne, then in LNB. The adventure had only lasted five months. In February, he had indeed been replaced by his compatriot Paul Gagné.

13 teams in four countries

He had made a last appearance in Switzerland, ten years later, when he had succeeded Andy Ritsch in the locker room of HC Chur, in LNB.

From 1984 to 2023, Mike Zettel coached thirteen teams in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Canada. In 2019, he also gesticulated behind the bench of Slovenia in a function of assistant in the world championship.

In 2022/2023, following working for a few years as a real estate agent, he was still an assistant coach within the development program at the University of Waterloo.
