During his long playing career, the 41-year-old played 80 games for his country across all age categories, amassing a total of 28 goals and 32 assists for 60 points along the way.

On Saturday, Plekanec explained that his recurring back problems had pushed him to hang up his skates. After his departure from the National Hockey League (NHL) in 2018, the former center finished his career in the Czech Republic with the Kladno Knights and Kometa Brno.

In 1,001 games in the NHL, the 71st overall pick in the 2003 draft has threaded the needle 233 times, adding 375 assists for 608 points with the Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
