Former Military YouTuber Sentenced for Unauthorized Entry in Ukraine: A Detailed Report

Geun Lee, a former military YouTuber who entered war-torn Ukraine without permission, was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence.

The court pointed out that participation in the volunteer army might place an undue burden on the state.

Former Captain Lee Geun, who went to Ukraine to participate in the war.

He was handed over to trial on charges of violating the Passport Act and causing a runaway injury, and today was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison and 3 years probation.

The Seoul Central District Court pointed out that “participating in the Ukrainian Volunteer Army may place an excessive burden on the state, contrary to the person’s intention.”

He also admitted guilt on the hit-and-run charges, which Lee had denied, and explained, “We took into account the fact that the injuries sustained by the victim were not light and that we did not reach an agreement with the victim.”

Lee, who met with reporters following the sentencing, said that it was an expected result and that he would consider whether to appeal.

Lee, a former captain of the Navy Special Warfare Corps, is suspected of entering Ukraine without permission from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where a level 4 travel alert was issued in March of last year due to the Russian invasion.

Lee, who served in the International Brigade of the Homeland Defense Forces, a foreign unit in Ukraine, returned to Korea in May last year for treatment of injuries.

A man in his 30s who went to Ukraine with Lee and participated in the volunteer army was sentenced to a fine of 3 million won by the Gwangju District Court in April.

Lee is also accused of leaving the scene without rescue measures following colliding with a motorcycle while driving a vehicle in downtown Seoul in July of last year.
