Mexico City.- Sven-Goran Eriksson, former head coach of the Mexican national team, has died at the age of 76 after a long illness, his family announced.
“After a long illness, Sven-Goran Eriksson died this morning (Monday) at his home surrounded by his family. Close mourners include his daughter Lina; his son Johan with his wife Amana and granddaughter Sky; his father Sven; his girlfriend Yanisette with her son Alcides; and his brother Lars-Erik with his wife Jumnong.
“The family asks that their wish to grieve privately and not be contacted be respected. You can leave your condolences and greetings on the website www.svengoraneriksson.com“, they reported in a statement.
Eriksson was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer last January.
“I am a healthy and sick man so far, and to say that I am not afraid of dying, I guess, is a lie. Sometimes it crosses my mind, but I try not to think about it,” Sven-Goran Eriksson told Amazon Prime Video.
Finally, Sven wanted to rest and say goodbye in his hometown of Sunne, Sweden, with his family.
“It’s a beautiful place, it calms you down. My father grew up there under the mountain. Straight ahead is Thornsby, where I grew up, and Sunne, where I was born. I always thought it was a great place to sleep. Ashes can be thrown into the water here. It feels like home,” she said at the time.
As head of the Mexican national team, Eriksson managed 13 matches between 2008 and 2009, with a record of six wins, one draw and six losses.
The legendary Swedish coach has managed teams such as Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio, the England National Team, the Mexican National Team and recently fulfilled his dream of managing Liverpool FC. (AGENCIA REFORMA)
