A former Maryland official was arrested last week and charged with sexual solicitation of a minor in Anne Arundel County, according to authorities.

The suspect, Luis Esteban Borunda, 65, was Maryland’s deputy secretary of state for eight years under Governor Larry Hogan.

Investigators said Borunda began chatting online with a special agent from the Fort Meade Army Criminal Investigation Division Office two weeks ago, thinking the agent was a 13-year-old girl.

The suspect allegedly sent an edited photo of himself to the officer and told him he wanted to meet at a location in Anne Arundel County on Aug. 30.

When he arrived, the police were waiting for him.

The suspect is a highly visible figure in the Hispanic community, attending conferences and events around the region.

He co-founded the organization US Hispanic Youth Entrepreneur Education, which helps young people get ready for their careers.

An online biography says he has six children and has been married since 1984.

Borunda already faces one charge of sexual solicitation of a minor, but Maryland State Police fear there are more victims.

Authorities are asking that anyone who has had contact with Borunda contact them directly.
