A former police officer in London was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Tuesday for the rape of a teenager and a colleague over several years, the judge questioning the reaction of his superiors to a background of crisis of confidence in the police.
Adam Provan, 44, was convicted in June of the double rape of a 16-year-old girl in 2010 and the sextuple rape of a Metropolitan Police colleague between 2003 and 2005.
The policeman had “a fascination bordering on an obsession with young women”, which dated back to long before his crimes, and “did not show the slightest remorse”, underlined judge Noel Lucas in rendering his decision before the Wood Green Crown Court in London.
“Shocking” and “appalling”
Adam Provan had already been sentenced in 2018 for the rape of the teenager to nine years in prison and dismissed the following year from the police. But he was released on bail three years later when an appeals court decided to hold a new trial, during which the rape charges once morest his colleague were added.
“By your actions you have dishonored the police forces”, asserted the judge in stating the sentence, who also described as “shocking” and “appalling” the way in which the hierarchy of the officer had treated the first complaints of his colleague once morest him.
The people who handled these complaints “were more concerned with dealing with one of their own rather than taking it seriously”, he claimed, adding that if the investigation had been properly carried out, the victim 16-year-old might have been spared. The police missed nine opportunities to arrest this serial rapist who was able to rage for 17 years.
