Four former presidents of the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA) will travel to Venezuela next Wednesday to show solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the presidential elections scheduled for July 28.
Vicente Fox of Mexico, Mireya Moscoso of Panama, Miguel Angel Rodriguez of Costa Rica, Jorge Tuto Quiroga of Bolivia, as well as former Colombian Vice President Marta Lucia Ramirez, will be present on election day, IDEA said in a statement on Saturday.
“The former presidents bring a word of hope, solidarity, and compliance with what those (the voters) freely decide at such a decisive moment in their history,” according to the IDEA note.
Comprised of more than thirty former heads of state and government from Spain and Latin America of different political and ideological affiliations, IDEA is a non-governmental entity that ensures the validity of the essential elements and fundamental components of democracy contained in the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
This Friday, the former leaders of IDEA warned in a statement of the “increasing repression” of the Nicolás Maduro regime against dissenting voices, just days before the presidential elections.
On July 28, Maduro will seek a third consecutive term in power in the elections, in which he faces nine candidates, including opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who appears to be the favorite.
