Luis Navarro, former lead singer of Amerika’n Sound, caused controversy and consternation after appearing at a school. The singer was convicted of rape of a minor in 2011.
In the ruling, Navarro was sentenced to a sentence of 12 years and 180 days, however, he only spent 8 in prison. Currently, he is on probation.
Despite his background, he was seen doing a show at a school in the Cerro Navia commune.in Santiago at the end of 2021, as confirmed by a CHV report. This set off alarms, since there were also children present and because of this, the prosecution launched a new criminal investigation against him.
The context of their presentation in that space, they say, was to cooperate in the anniversary of the school. Nevertheless, This case opens the debate on how “accessory penalties” work, which are supposed to prevent those convicted of rape or sexual abuse from working with minors.
Why is the presentation of the former lead singer of Amerika’n Sound not legal?
“It is very striking that a subject convicted of sexual crimes does a show in a school. That led to the initiation of a criminal investigation by the Public Ministry.” Confirmed for CHV News, Roberto Alarcón, spokesman for the Central North Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
“We find ourselves with regulations that are strict, but we have detected deficiencies in the system. These are related to how compliance with these sanctions is verified,” adds Alarcón.
One of the problems with this regulation, says the report, is that many times the sentences do not take care of the accessory penalties. “They did not impose them, and if they were imposed it was in a deficient way,” says the spokesman.
From the Alianza School, they assure that they did not know the singer’s situation. “The possibility arises from a proxy to offer, by proximity, the possibility that he would come to sing one or 2 songs. We had no idea,” declared Yanina Artuzo, director of the establishment.
