In the Democratic Party, former lawmaker Jeong Bong-ju, who passed the primary for the Gangbuk district in Seoul, came under fire for comments he made on a past YouTube broadcast.

The idea was to give crutches as a prize to anyone who steps on an ankle mine, but it was criticized for mocking injured soldiers.

Former lawmaker Jeong apologized, but the People Power Party demanded the resignation of the candidate, saying that the Democratic Party, which nominated him, was largely responsible, and the Democratic Party issued a warning once morest harsh language and warned that failure to do so might result in cancellation of the nomination.

This is reporter Kim Jeong-woo’s report.

The statement in question came during a conversation regarding ways to utilize North Korea’s ski resorts in 2017, ahead of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

″There’s something cool regarding the DMZ, ankle mines. We’re going into the DMZ and giving out prizes. We’re giving out crutches to people who step on ankle mines.”

There was criticism that it was mocking the incident in 2015 where two South Korean soldiers were injured by a North Korean military wooden ship mine.

Former lawmaker Jeong bowed his head and said, “I sincerely apologize with the same heart as then and now,” but the People Power Party rejected his candidacy, even mentioning the fact that former lawmaker Jeong appeared on a YouTube broadcast on January 4th and described the people as ‘insects.’ They demanded his resignation.

″Candidate Chung’s creepy and vulgar language and profanity are horrendous beyond imagination. The responsibility of the Democratic Party for nominating such a scoundrel is too great.”

The Democratic Party warned, “Be careful of words and actions that do not meet the public’s expectations,” and warned, “If you violate this, you will be subject to urgent disciplinary action, including cancellation of nomination.”

In the past, ahead of the election, he faced backlash for making so-called “degrading remarks regarding the elderly,” and recently, the party leader himself apologized for using the term “second vote” to degrade voters who did not support him, saying it was extremely inappropriate.

″All candidates and members of our Democratic Party, including me, will have to be more careful regarding what we say and do in the future.″

Former lawmaker Jeong Bong-ju defeated incumbent lawmaker Park Yong-jin, who received a 30% deduction in the primary due to a low evaluation, and was nominated in the Gangbuk district of Seoul.

In the Gwangju Seo-gu Gap primary, Rep. Song Gap-seok lost, and none of the incumbent lawmakers, including Park Gwang-on and Yoon Young-chan, who disclosed that they had received “low evaluations,” received nomination.

They are all lawmakers who are classified as non-religious.

The Democratic Party will soon announce the results of the primary elections for 17 constituencies.

The results of Yang Moon-seok, a former standing member of the Korea Communications Commission who was disciplined by the party for the so-called ‘watermelon’ remarks that disparaged members of the ‘non-myeong group’, and Rep. Jeon Hae-cheol, a representative pro-Moon group, are attracting attention.
