Wahyu Setiawan, a former commissioner of IndonesiaS General Elections Commission (KPU), prefers not to dwell on the painful past that led to his involvement in a bribery scandal. The scandal, which revolved around the appointment of a House of Representatives member, continues to cast a shadow over Setiawan’s career.
Remembering the Painful Past: A Difficult Task
When questioned by reporters outside the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) building in Jakarta on January 6, 2025, Setiawan responded tersely to inquiries about the bribery case. “If I have to remember past events that were painful, that’s not good,” he stated.
Connections and Acknowledgment
Setiawan admitted to knowing Hasto Kristiyanto, the Secretary general of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), who is currently implicated in the harun Masiku case. He also acknowledged his acquaintance with Agustiani Tio Fridelina, another individual connected to the case.Setiawan described both individuals as his seniors.
“I do know Mr. Hasto, I also know Mrs.agustiani. I know them well and I convey that I know them well, I cannot cover up the facts about them – they are my seniors. I know them well,” he said.
No New Revelations
Setiawan maintained that he had already provided all relevant information to KPK investigators during his previous interrogation in 2020 when he was a suspect in the case. He emphasized that his current summons was as a witness against Kristiyanto.
“I was summoned by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in my capacity as a witness against the suspect Mr. Hasto Kristiyanto. So my position is clear like that and I have nothing new to say as I have already said everything at that time,” he explained.
Respect for the Legal Process
Setiawan stressed his respect for the ongoing legal process and highlighted his full cooperation with the KPK. “I am a citizen. I came to the Corruption Eradication Commission to initiate a summons, which means I am a citizen who fully understands my obligations, I respect the legal process,” he said.
Background of the bribery Scandal
The bribery scandal revolved around allegations that Setiawan received bribes to secure the position of DPR member through the PAW (interim replacement) mechanism for PDIP candidate Harun Masiku. In 2020, the KPK named Setiawan, his confidante Agustiani Tio Fridelina, Harun Masiku, and a private individual named Saeful as suspects.
While Setiawan, Agustiani, and Saeful were subsequently found guilty and served prison sentences, Harun Masiku remains at large.Toward the end of 2024, the KPK named Hasto Kristiyanto as a new suspect in the case, alleging his involvement with Harun Masiku in bribing Setiawan.
