Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who was suffering from leukemia, died on Monday morning. The chairman of Forza Italia and founder of Mediaset was 86 years old.
The billionaire media mogul was admitted to Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital last Friday to be treated for the chronic myelomonocytic leukemia he has been suffering from for some time. As “La Repubblica” reports, he showed no signs of improvement – the situation worsened on Sunday night.
Who was by Berlusconi’s side in his final hours?
His brother Paolo and his children Marina, Eleonora, Barbara and Pier Silvio rushed to the hospital early Monday morning. His girlfriend Marta Fascina also accompanied him in the last few hours.
In terms of health, Berlusconi repeatedly had major health problems in his last years: in 2016 he had heart surgery, in 2020 he had to go to the hospital because of a corona infection and pneumonia. In 2022 he was also hospitalized for a urinary tract infection. In 1997 he underwent surgery for a prostate tumour. He had also had a pacemaker for several years. Recently it became known that he was suffering from chronic leukemia.
In private, Berlusconi always made headlines. The twice-divorced politician leaves behind five children and many grandchildren. He was last seen dating Forza Italia MP Marta Fascina, who was more than 50 years his junior.
