Former Indian footballer Surjit Sengupta passes away

Kolkata: Former Indian footballer and legendary East Bengal legend Surjit Sengupta has died at the age of 70. He was a member of the Indian team that won a bronze medal in the 1970 Asian Games and died at a private hospital in Kolkata. Kovid was admitted to the hospital on January 23 with a positive. He was shifted to a ventilator last week due to poor health.

Following the departure of legendary batsman Subhash Bhowmick last month, another legendary East Bengal cricketer is set to retire. Sengupta ruled the midfield during the golden days of the Kolkata club. Sengupta was a member of the team that won the Calcutta Football League six times in a row. Sengupta won six IFA Shields and three Durant Cup trophies in his East Bengal jersey.

Born on August 30, 1951, the player began his career with the Kidderpore Club. In addition to East Bengal, Kolkata’s giants Mohan Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting Club have also been linked. Mohun Bagan played in the jersey for the 1972 and 1974 seasons. In 1980, he also signed a contract with the Mohammedans.

After retiring from football, he turned to the media and was the editor of the Ajkal daily from Bengal.
