Former Illini Star Marcus Domask Finding His Groove in G League
After a brief stint in the G-League, former Illinois star Marcus Domask looks to be hitting his stride. After being bounced around the Windy City Bulls’ rotation early on, he’s settling into a prominent role and showing the talent that made him a star in college.
On Monday, Domask had arguably his best performance as a professional, a 16-point effort against the Indiana Pacers that included six rebounds, three steals, two assists and a blocked shot in 33 minutes.
“A strong showing from Marcus,” the Windy City Bulls tweeted, sharing a snapshot of Domask driving to the basket for a ferocious dunk.
Domask’s sophomore slump
That tweet seemingly announced Domask’s arrival, a moment of brilliance that solidified a solid showing, punctuated by ten points, six rebounds and an assist.
It wasn’t always smooth sailing. After averaging 15.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists as a senior at Illinois in 2023-24 – a season during which he led the Illini to their best finish since their 2004-05 national runners-up campaign – Domask braced himself for the NBA.
But after nearly two months, the reality was a G-League stint with Chi-town’s Windy City Bulls.
Specified as a ‘tweener — either a 2-guard lacking elite explosiveness and sharp shooting or a small forward undersized by NBA standards — Domask needed to prove himself.
The NBA wasn’t calling right away
Domask averaged a pedestrian 5.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists through nine games before stepping into the spotlight against the Mad Ants and offering a glimpse into his potential.
While he was quietly logging decent minutes, the production wasn’t there.
So, could that powerful performance against the Mad Ants be a turning point?
Domask let his play do the talking – showing sizzling efficiency from the field, shooting 5-for-10 – going 3-for-3 from the line
If he can continue replicating this production
“He showed a lot against the Mad Ants: 5-of-10 from the field, hitting some key shots
But if over time he can consistently delivers performances like this, Domask will, have more nights like those ahead in the G-League and eventually could carve out a niche for himself on an NBA roster – if not in Chicago, perhaps somewhere else.
What are some adjustments Marcus Domask has had to make going from college to the G-league?
