Former Honduran president pleads “not guilty” in US

Juan Orlando Hernández pleaded not guilty to charges of drug trafficking and possession of heavy weapons once morest him in the United States


Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández (2014-2022) pleaded not guilty this Tuesday (05/10/2022) before a federal court in New York to the crimes of cocaine trafficking and possession of heavy weapons of which he is accused by the US Government.

“Not guilty, Your Honor,” Hernandez responded to Judge Kevin Castel’s question regarding his plea to the charges brought once morest him.

In his first in-person appearance before the United States courts, where he was extradited on April 21, Hernández appeared dressed in the blue uniform of the prison where he is awaiting trial. Upon entering the courtroom, wearing a mask, he smiled and greeted the public and the press.

At the same time that Juan Orlando Hernández appeared before the New York courts, it was learned that the former director of the Honduran Police, Juan Carlos Bonilla, was extradited this Tuesday (05/10/2022) to the United States, accused of “supervising” drug trafficking operations on behalf of the former Honduran president.

The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) plane, a twin-turboprop ATR-42-500, took off from a Honduran Air Force base in Tegucigalpa at 9:30 a.m. local time, with “El Tigre” Bonilla on board, handcuffed and under guard, according to a journalist from the French news agency.
