Former Hiroshima player Batista currently plays in Mexico
Outfielder Xavier Batista, a former Hiroshima helper, is in a difficult situation. He accumulated 62 arches in three years starting in 2017, but his contract was terminated in 2019 following a doping violation was discovered. He has since moved to Mexico and Taiwan, and has been signed as a free agent three times in the last two years. At 31 years old, he’s not old enough to slow down, but he’s in a tough position.
Batista signed a training contract with Hiroshima in 2016, signed a control contract in the middle of 2017, and hit 11 home runs that year. He hit 25 home runs in 99 games the following year and 26 home runs in 2019, but a urine test in September of the same year revealed a doping violation. He was given a six-month suspension and he had his contract released off-season.
In 2021, he had a batting average of .296, 19 home runs, and 57 RBIs in Mexico, but in Taiwan in 2022, he slumped with a batting average of .157 and left the team. He returned to Mexico this year, playing 19 games for the Leon Bravos and 14 for the Guadalajara Mariachis before becoming a free agent.
Signed a contract with the Campeche Pirates in June, and showed signs of recovery with a batting average of .244, 16 home runs, and 40 RBIs in 46 games. Will the 31-year-old long-range gun be able to regain his brilliance?
