Former great champions keep 2023 title hopes alive

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two former grand champions competing in the 86th annual Super Bowl of Safety are among the competitors advancing to the final round of the tournament.

Roland Bolduc and Jeffrey Langenhahn, who have combined for three Best of Show honors since 2014, will battle it out for a shot at a national title on Aug. 19. After three days of competition, the top five performers from nine commercial vehicle classes won a place to maneuver through a complex course on the final day of the American Trucking National Truck Driving Championships and National Pickup Truck Driving Championships. Associations.

Bolduc with FedEx Express of Connecticut is competing in the 5-axle sleeper class. Langenhahn with XPO of Wisconsin competes in the dual trailer division.

In the first round of competition, Bolduc stumbled early on his run in the skills class. A complex layout proved difficult for the reigning NTDC grand champion, who also won the grand champion trophy in 2017.

As he said, “It’s a very difficult visual journey – shiny ground. The angles that were with the dormant unit, you can’t see anything,” Bolduc told WK Transport-Logistique shortly after his August 18 race.

Langenhahn, winner of the 2014 event in Pittsburgh, pointed out the not-so-impossible areas of the course.

“You have to think throughout the course,” he said. “My favorite part of the course was probably where you had to ride the duck on it; this would be the left front steer tire.

The two stars, however, acknowledged having put in strong performances in the two other disciplines of the competition: a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle and a written examination of the rules and regulations of the industry.

Notable competitors who also made it to the NTDC Finals included four major state champions: Joe Hicks of Rhode Island with XPO, William Colantuone of Massachusetts with FedEx Express, Michael Bills of North Carolina with FedEx Express, and Dave Schroeder of Ohio with FedEx Freight. Competing in the twins division alongside Langenhahn, this year marked Schroeder’s second trip to the summer classic.

“I love being a part of it,” the hometown favorite said earlier this year. “I love promoting it to young drivers; just try to get them to focus on the same safety-focused aspect of being able to stay safe so you can compete at the state level and hopefully eventually at the national level.

Bills, the national step van winner in 2017 and competing this year in the straight truck category, explained his strategy to TT this summer.

“At the end of the day, it’s just that once you go to nationals, it’s about staying focused on the task at hand, whatever area you’re actually competing in at the time. »

After the end of the final round, the winners of the respective classes will be announced at an awards gala. Tournament organizers also recognize the drivers for their contributions to the event, as well as their professional excellence.
