That’s why ex-GC-Goalie Mall is leaving the holiday paradise
“Football in Cyprus is poisoned to the core”
After four years on the dream island of Cyprus, it’s over. Former Aarau and GC goalie Joël Mall has clear ideas regarding how to proceed. The end of his career is also not out of the question for the 31-year-old.
Dream beaches, picturesque sunsets, pure sunshine – Joël Mall (31) gives up all of that voluntarily! Although the goalie had a contract extension with Olympiakos Nicosia that was ready to be signed, the Aargauer decided to leave the holiday paradise of Cyprus with his girlfriend and two children.
Mall zu Blick: “As a family, we would have liked to stay, life there is really great. But as a footballer, I increasingly lost my joy. Football in Cyprus is poisoned to the core, I mightn’t identify with it anymore. Nevertheless: I am very grateful for the sporting and human experiences that I have gained over the four years there. »
“I’m not ready for everything anymore”
After stopping at Aarau, GC and Darmstadt, Mall embarked on the Cyprus adventure in the summer of 2018. A good choice: He was a regular goalie at top club Limassol, following moving to Nicosia he was even voted the best goalie in the league last season. This seal of quality now has the consequence that offers flutter in on a regular basis. But so far nothing that has convinced him. Mall admits he’s a bit picky because the next stop has three things to do: “I’m not ready for everything anymore. The family must be happy. The sporting challenge must excite me. And since as a footballer the time to earn good money is limited, the financial situation must also be right.”
He currently keeps fit with a private trainer and commutes with his family between Germany, his girlfriend’s home country, and Aarau, where he began his professional career in 2008. He leaves the rumors regarding the return to his youth club FC Aarau, which is still looking for a number 2 behind Simon Enzler, without comment. In any case, the venerable Brügglifeld would fit his ideas: “Maybe it’s naive of me because it doesn’t exist anymore: But I want a club where honesty comes first,” said Mall following his experiences in Cyprus the international organization once morest match-fixing as the “source of the virus”.
And what if there is no suitable offer by the end of August? ‘Then that would have been it. My girlfriend and I prefer to tackle our future plans instead of waiting months for a club to call us.” But the end of a career is currently the most unlikely scenario: “I’m convinced the right offer will come.” Who knows – football is not only played in Cyprus, but also on other dream islands…
