Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is appealing in cassation in the so-called “wiretapping” case, his lawyer, Maître Jacqueline Laffont, said on Wednesday during a press briefing at the exit of the court.

Already sentenced to 3 years in prison, including 1 year closed by the Paris Criminal Court at first instance, Nicolas Sarkozy saw his sentence validated by the Court of Appeal.

“We are going to lodge an appeal in cassation, it is a fair fight once morest an unfair and unjust decision”, declared his council following a deliberation without surprise.

Considering that “justice has great difficulty in recognizing its wrongs”, Jacqueline Laffont reaffirmed that “Nicolas Sarkozy is innocent of the facts with which he is accused” and “intends to continue on this path” to be cleared.

Thierry Herzog and Gilbert Azibert, who were sentenced to the same sentences as the former head of state, will also appeal to the Court of Cassation.

As a reminder, the facts for which Nicolas Sarkozy was once more prosecuted in court, started in 2013 with his wiretapping concerning the file of the alleged Libyan financing of his electoral campaign.

Quickly, the investigators realized that the former President of the Republic was using two other separate telephone lines, in the name of Paul Bismuth, and with which he communicated only with his lawyer, Maître Thierry Herzog.

It will then emerge, from the tapping carried out on these two new lines, that Nicolas Sarkozy allegedly tried to obtain, from Judge Azibert who was hoping, in exchange, for a post in Monaco, information on another case in which he was implicated. (the Bettencourt affair).

This new conviction, accompanied by a loss of his civic rights for a period of 3 years, comes as the PNF (national financial prosecutor’s office) requested, on Thursday, the dismissal of 13 people including Nicolas Sarkozy, in the case of the financing suspected Libyan from his 2007 campaign.
