Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy advises his successor Emmanuel Macron not to try to “build an artificial friendship” with Algeria, while warning once morest the deterioration of relations with Morocco, in an interview published on Wednesday at Figaro.
“I supported President Macron in the last presidential election. That does not mean that we agreed on everything,” said Nicolas Sarkozy, commenting on the August 22 release of a new book, “Le Temps des combats” (Fayard).
“Let’s not try to build an artificial friendship with Algerian leaders who systematically use France as a scapegoat to hide their own shortcomings and their lack of legitimacy,” he adds.
“They will always refuse her. They need too much to divert attention from the failure into which they have plunged their country by regularly accusing France of all the evils, ”he continues.
Emmanuel Macron is seeking to bring regarding a rapprochement with Algeria, in the form of a historic reconciliation, which was to materialize in particular in the spring with a state visit to France by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. But this visit, never officially announced, has so far not been scheduled, a sign of persistent misunderstandings between the two countries.
“A state visit has conditions and must lead to results. This is not a tourist visit,” he added.
In his interview with Le Figaro, Nicolas Sarkozy is also worried regarding the impact of these efforts vis-à-vis Algiers in the relationship with Morocco, which is also going through a period of great difficulty.
“This tropism distances us from Morocco. We risk losing everything. We will not win the confidence of Algeria, and we will lose that of Morocco”, judged the former French president.
