Former French Champion Joins Senegal for World Cup: Meet Gnonsiane Niombla

Another former great Blue chose to change her jersey to represent Senegal. Gnonsiane Niombla (33 years old, 106 caps), 2017 world and 2018 European champion with the French team, followed the path of Claudine Mendy this season, who left to represent the Lionesses of Teranga last year during the Championship of African Nations. However, the shift is not one-way, like goalkeeper Hatadou Sako, who made her debut for Les Bleues a few months ago, following keeping the Senegal cages until 2019.

Niombla, a versatile back who left Paris 92 this summer for the Romanian club of Gloria Bistrita, played her last competition with the Blues during the 2019 World Cup. Having respected the three-year waiting period, she was free to change selection if the administrative documents allowed him to do so.

After playing in the African TQO, she should play the World Cup in December

She is participating this week in the Africa zone Olympic qualifying tournament in Luanda (Angola). Beaten by the two favorites during two great battles once morest the host country (22-21) and Cameroon (17-15), Senegal lost a good part of its chances of seeing the Paris Olympics next summer, despite a final victory over Congo Brazzaville (27-22).

The selection coached by Frenchman Yacine Messaoudi, coach of Paris 92, will meet for the World Championship in Scandinavia (November 30 – December 17), and Niombla should be there.
