The coming out of former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has generated a lot of attention. On Sunday, he showed his partner Étienne (34) on Instagram for the first time. This announcement happened shortly before the kick-off of the European Championship final. He now discussed the post on “Sport 1”.

“It wasn’t news to family and close friends, they’d known regarding it for a long time. But a lot of people were involved by now. That’s why I wanted to get the news out myself,” he explained. He continued: “My son David repeated his victory in the GT Masters from the day before on Sunday. It was the biggest success of his motorsport career so far. I thought this would be a good opportunity.”

«I let things come to me»

Schumacher’s son David commented on his father’s love post on Instagram shortly following it was published with the words: “I’m very happy that you have finally found someone with whom you can really see that you feel really comfortable and safe.”

But back to Ralf Schumacher. He doesn’t yet know what to expect in the future. “I’m just letting things come to me. It’s not a big deal for me. I just did what I thought was right. But I’ve received a very positive response for something that’s normal for me,” he revealed.

The former F1 star is not willing to speculate on whether his coming out will inspire others to do the same. “Let’s see what happens next. I will travel to Budapest next week and, as always, will be highly motivated to do my job as an expert at the Hungarian Grand Prix for Sky,” he said. And: “I hope that my expertise will be the focus and not my coming out.”
