[周刊王CTWANT] During his tenure, former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari facilitated the meeting of the century between former Soviet Supreme Chairman Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin and former US President Bill Clinton in Helsinki, and actively mediated the Kosovo War in 2008. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011. He suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in recent years and was reported to have passed away on the 16th Taiwan time at the age of 86.

It is understood that Attisali officially became the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party of Finland in 1993. He believed that Finland should actively participate in international affairs, and this political view also became one of the platforms of his presidential campaign. In February 1994, Attisali narrowly defeated the Swedish People’s Party candidate Rehn following two rounds of voting and was successfully elected as the President of Finland. He took office on March 1 of the same year.

During Attissali’s tenure, he supported Finland’s membership of the EU. In the 1994 referendum, 56% of Finnish voters voted in favor of joining the EU. Not only that, Attisali also facilitated the talks between Yeltsin and Clinton in Helsinki during his term of office, and held talks with then Russian Prime Minister Chernomyrdin and then Serbian President Miloshevi in 1999. to negotiate an end to the war in the former Yugoslav province of Kosovo.

Due to frequent resistance from the Finnish parliament, which favors a cautious foreign policy, and internal pressure from the Social Democratic Party, Attisali did not seek re-election. Later, Foreign Minister Tarja Halonen took over the presidency and became Finland’s first female president. After stepping down as president, Atishali accepted invitations to serve in a number of international organizations and established the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI), an independent non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting and maintaining peace in unstable areas.

On October 10, 2008, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that it would award Attissali the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his “important efforts to resolve international disputes across several continents over the past 30 years.” Attisali suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in recent years. Despite his efforts to fight the disease, he passed away today in Helsinki at the age of 86. The current president of Finland, Sauli Niinisto, earlier confirmed, “We received the news of the death of President Attishali, and we are deeply saddened by this.”
